چکیده

Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and Optical Burst Switching (OBS) are optical networking concepts based on fully exploiting fast dynamic allocation of (D)WDM channels. Compared to more static approaches focusing on providing endto-end optical channels, OPS and OBS aim at providing greater bandwidth efficiency, granularity and flexibility. In this paper we give an overview of the issues arising when designing an optical switch for either OPS or OBS, including packet formats, contention resolution techniques, and switching fabrics.

Multistage Architectures for Optical Packet Switching Using SOA-Based Broadcast-and-Select Switches

Optical packet/burst switches can be scaled to high port counts using multi-stage architectures. To reduce the number of switching elements in SOA-based broadcast-and-select architectures, we deploy only a few stages while exploiting the WDM dimension.

SOA-Based Optical Packet Switching Architectures

The service evolution and the rapid increase in traffic levels fuel the interest toward switching paradigms enabling the fast allocation of Wavelength Division Multiplexing WDM channels in an on demand fashion with fine granularities (microsecond scales). For this reason, in the last years, different optical switching paradigms have been proposed (Sabella et al., 2000): optical-packet switching...

Optical Packet Switching Technology for Future Global Sensing Networks

The amount of Internet traffic in current backbone networks has grown enormously due to wide deployment of broadband Internet access and new multimedia applications such as sensing data sharing and real-time streaming. In regard to optical transport technology based on Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM), available bandwidth within single fiber could be over 20Tb/s, according to the most recent...

A Comparison and Performance of Different Optical Switching Architectures

Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and transmission networks based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) have been increasingly deployed in the Internet infrastructure over the last decade in order to meet the huge increasing demand for bandwidth. Several different technologies have been developed for optical packet switching such as space switches, broadcast-and-select, input buffered switches...

Optical Interconnection Technology in Switches, Routers and Optical Cross Connects

The performance of dataand telecommunication equipment must keep up with the increasing network speed. At the same time, one must deal with the internal interconnection complexity, often growing exponentially with the number of ports. Therefore, new interconnection technologies to be used internally in the equipment are needed. Optical interconnection technology is a promising alternative and m...
